Center for Information Technology Integration University of Michigan 519 West William Street Ann Arbor, MI 48103-4943 CITI Technical Report 92-8 NESTMOD Simulation of DQDB Metropolitan Networks Gerald A. Winters [email protected] David W. Bachmann [email protected] Toby J. Teorey [email protected] Local area computer networks are well-established, and highly-interconnected, heterogeneous local networks are coming into prominence. NESTMOD is a combined analytical modeling and simulation tool, based on the existing tools NetMod and NEST, that is responsible for representing the topology of interconnected networks as well as providing library routines that describe the behavior of the interconnected networks. As an example of current technology, the metropolitan area network, DQDB (distributed queue dual bus), has been added to NESTMOD. The purpose of this paper is to describe the DQDB simulation and compare the simulation results with well-known analytical results.

Overload Performance of Media Access Protocols for Dual Bus High-Speed Metropolitan Area Networks

In this paper we evaluate some of the media access control (MAC) protocols for high-speed metropolitan area networks based on the dual bus architecture. These MAC protocols are the Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) family of protocols and the Cyclic Reservation Multiple Access (CRMA). We carry out several simulation experiments to compare the performance of DQDB family of protocols with the CRM...

A Proposal of a Minimal-State Processing Search Algorithm for Isochronous Channel Reuse Problems in DQDB Networks

The IEEE 802.6 MAC standard protocol defines the distributed-queue dual bus (DQDB) for metropolitan area networks (MANs). The isochronous channel reuse problem (ICRP) has been studied for the efficient use of DQDB. Given a set of established connections and a set of connection requests, the goal of ICRP is to maximize the number of satisfied requests by finding a proper channel assignment, such...

Dynamic Real-Time Channel Setup and Tear-Down in DQDB Networks

Networks Chao-Ju Hou and Kar Shun Tsoi Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering The University of Wisconsin Madison, WI 53706-1691 [email protected] Abstract The Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) protocol has been jointly adopted by IEEE and ANSI as a standard (IEEE802.6) for metropolitan area networks (MANs). As such, how to provide various services in the DQDB protocol has attracted ...

Markovian Analysis of DQDB MAC Protocol

The Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) protocol or IEEE 802.6 has been accepted as the international standard for Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN). This paper describes a combined M/G/1 and Markov model for the steady state performance analysis of a DQDB network. In the analysis each station is considered independently, but not in isolation, thus avoiding the computational complexity which would...

Incorporating Continuation-of-Message Information, Slot Reuse, and Fairness in DQDB Networks

Several important modifications to the distributed queue dual bus (DQDB) (IEEE 802.6) protocol for metropolitan area networks (MANs) are proposed. These modifications are aimed at improving not only the throughput and delay performance of the network but also its fairness performance. The first proposal exploits the continuation-of-message (COM) information in a DQDB segment in order to minimiz...
